“Our Voices” multi-media exhibition at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg

To commemorate the International Safe Abortion Day, the #MyBodyMyChoice coalition is hosting a multi-media exhibition from September 26-28 at the former Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill. Curated by the award-winning director Mmabatho Montsho, the exhibition titled “Our Voices”, this will seek to combat stigma by bringing to the fore real stories of women and young girls’ experiences with unsafe abortions and honest portrayals of abortion and challenges in accessing SRH services in South Africa. The launch of the exhibition will be held on September 26 and will open to the public from the 27 – 29 September.

#Endthestigma campaign

EndTheStigma is an endeavour of the #MyBodyMyChoice campaign to tackle abortion stigma in South Africa. The three-week mini-campaign aims to increase awareness about abortion so that women know their options, and challenge the stigma, practices and mind-sets that attempt to limit women and prevent them from exercising autonomy over their bodies and achieving their goals.

This mini-campaign will commemorate Women’s Month in South Africa, which is a tribute to the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws.

What: A digital mini campaign to increase awareness about the impact of stigma and what we can do to end it.

When:  The campaign will take place 7 August – 21 August.

This campaign is run by a group of dedicated partners who are working together to ensure that all girls and women have access to essential SRH services and commodities, such as equitable access to contraception and safe abortion. We believe the right to SRH is an essential component of the right to life, the right to health, the right to education, and the right to equality and non-discrimination.
